MDTC's Great Balls of Fur place 2nd and 3rd in Amana, IA!

With clear skies and temperatures reaching the 80's, MDTC's Great Balls of Fur flyball team enjoyed two days of Iowa sunshine and fun flyball racing at Hawkeye Hustler's Iowa Heartland Fall Fling. A large tournament, the team had the pleasure of racing teams from as far as Missouri and Nebraska. The strategy for the weekend was a challenging one: while Rosie (Kira Haslam), Maddy (Sarah Willems) and Teddy (Karen Michalski) would race each heat, Disney (Mary Pavleje) and Jasmine (Kira/Mark Haslam) would share the #2 spot in the line-up, with Kobi (Mark Anderson) as the ringer when needed (any of you who know how 'fast' Kobi is will chuckle at the idea of Kobi as a ringer!). While the first 2 races were rough, the team stuck to its plan and won its last 4 races, earning a well-deserved and hard-earned 2nd place finish. Sunday proved to be a bit more difficult, however, as the racing format was changed from 'best 3-out-of-5' to '3 of 3' (which means that each heat counts for a point and there is little margin for error and no opportunity to make up ground). The team decided to race all of the #2 spot dogs equally, and was pleased to place 3rd out of 7 teams. Special mention goes to Sarah Willems and Maddy for meeting the challenge of passing 3 different dogs and maintaining a sense of humor and love of racing! Also, congratulations go out to Mari and Disney who earned another new flyball title (FDX)!.
