September 2-4, 2011 Jefferson, WI

Milwaukee Dog's Great Balls of Fur flyball team was in a "Flyball Frenzy" on Labor Day weekend. It was High Fives' annual tournament with MDTC's team members helping run the tournament again this year.

On Friday, our team was seeded 3rd, but finished 5th because we had to replace one of our faster dogs due to injury. The team did earn a fair number of points, though, so the result wasn't too disappointing. (In flyball, you earn points whether you win or lose a race.) The team members were: Sprout (Sarah Willems), Deuce (Marnie Hammerle), Oscar (Jaime Restorff), Satch (owned by the Restorffs, raced by Kim Novotny), with one of our new dogs, Badger (Jody Lokken), practicing at his first tournament.

Saturday was a really exciting day for the team. Not only did the team finish 2nd after being seeded 7th, but Karen Michalski's dog, Ted, reached 50,000points! Dogs earn either 25, 5, 1 or 0 points for each heat, depending on how fast the team runs, so Ted's run a lot of heats in his 12 years. Congratulations, Ted! Sprout, Deuce, Oscar, and Satch made up the rest of the team on Saturday. We also had another new dog, Daisy (Nan Resch), practicing for the first time at this tournament.

Racing on Sunday was a challenge for the team because we had to replace Oscar with Ted which caused us to be too fast for our division. As a result, we "broke out" (ran faster than the minimum time required) too often and automatically finished last. But the team members earned a lot of points, so everyone was still happy with the results. Sunday's racers were Sprout, Deuce, Ted, and Satch. In addition, Jessie (Karen Michalski) and Max (Chris Cowles) practiced on Sunday. Also practicing on Sunday was Remy (Mari Pavleje) who practiced with the High Fives team because we ran out of practice spots on our team. Thanks, High Fives!

A big thank you to Neil Restorff, our boxloader, to Jaime's brother, Kevin, and Sarah's children, Sydney and Bryce, our ball shaggers, to Jody and Nan who were there all three days to help when they weren't practicing, and to Dawn Butler who came to help on Sunday.
